The Jugoya Tug of War in Ise Amaterasu Mioya Shrine, Kurume

Every autumn, Jugoya Tug of War takes place in Oishi Town, Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This event, centered around the Ise Amaterasu Mioya Shrine (commonly known as Oishi Shrine), brings the entire community together in a lively and traditional celebration. This year, I participated for the first time since elementary school, feeling both nostalgia and new excitement. I would like to share the charm I experienced during this event.

The History and Role of Ise Amaterasu Mioya Shrine (Oishi Shrine)

First, let me introduce Ise Amaterasu Mioya Shrine, the venue for Jugoya Tug of War. The history of this shrine is ancient, with its founding date unknown, but it has long been the cultural center of Oishi Town. The Jugoya Tug of War, centered around this shrine, has been a cherished and important event for local residents for many years.

The Origins and Details of the Tug of War

The “Jugoya Tug of War” originally began as an event to pray for a good harvest and the prosperity of the community. Traditionally, it was believed that tug of war could ward off evil and attract prosperity. As a result, the event is not just a competition but also holds great significance in strengthening the unity of the community.

What makes this event so special is that both adults and children can enjoy it together. The sight of people pulling the rope with all their strength is awe-inspiring, and the spectators cheer as one. Additionally, participants carry the rope through the town, and there is a strength challenge known as “Oishi Kakae,” where competitors try to lift a heavy stone for as long as possible.

The Atmosphere on the Day

As evening approached, the area around the shrine was beautifully decorated for the festival, and the soft glow of lanterns created a magical atmosphere. This year, the full moon of Jugoya was particularly stunning, and smiles spread across the faces of those gazing up at the sky.

This year, in the match between children and adults, the children’s team achieved a splendid victory! The adults praised the children with warm smiles, and the atmosphere was filled with warmth and joy.

Conclusion

Jugoya Tug of War at Oishi Shrine is an essential event that strengthens community ties and preserves time honored traditions for future generations. With the rich history of Oishi Shrine as its backdrop, this event brings together people of all ages, symbolizing the vitality of the community. If you have the chance, I highly recommend attending this wonderful event and experiencing the region’s traditions and warm connections firsthand!
