On Monday, August 5, 2024, the “365th Chikugo River Fireworks Festival” will be held in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The “Chikugo River Fireworks Festival” is one of the largest fireworks festivals in Western Japan, and this year marks its 365th occurrence.
This fireworks festival originated from the Suitengū Shrine dedication fireworks in 1650 and has long been cherished by the people of Kurume and the Chikugo region. It began when Tadayori Arima, the second lord of the Kurume Domain, donated the shrine grounds to Suitengū Shrine, and celebrated its completion with a fireworks display, having a history of over 360 years.
Originally called the “Suitengū Shrine Dedication Fireworks Festival,” it was renamed the “Chikugo River Fireworks Festival” in 1965. The launch sites are at the Nagatoishi Riverbed and Komorino Riverbed in Kurume City. There are five viewing areas: Kyomachi, Sasayama, Komorino, Nagatoishi, and Miyaki.
The event will take place from 7:40 PM to 8:50 PM, with 15,000 fireworks planned for launch. In the event of bad weather, the festival will be postponed to August 7. If it cannot be held on August 7, it will be canceled. There will also be a live stream on YouTube.
